WALKING INTO DREAMS (THE SECOND CHANCE NOVEL SERIES) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

She thought her dreams were only dreams—until they started coming true.

Emily Noland has spent her life hiding behind the scars of a childhood accident—believing they’ve made her unlovable, invisible, unworthy.

Then, high in the Rockies, after viewing a haunting old film, she begins to dream. Vivid, impossible dreams. Of a man she’s never met. Of a place she’s never been. Of a love she never thought she’d find.

Driven by a whisper of hope, Emily follows her dreams across the ocean and into the green hills of Ireland. There, a walking tour leads her straight to the man she had met only in her mind—until fate led her to him.

Walking Into Dreams is a heart-stirring story of second chances, destiny, and the courage to believe in love—even when it defies logic, distance, and time.

Steven Decker is the author of many novels, including the bestselling Time Chain series and Child of Another Kind. His love of writing was born on the day he threw a spitball at one of his 5th grade classmates. Rather than punish him, his wise old teacher, Mrs. Brewer, called Steven to the front of the class and handed him a book of poetry. She quietly instructed him to memorize “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” by Robert Frost, and informed him that he would be reciting the poem in front of the class the following day. Mrs. Brewer hit a home run.

Inspired by Frost’s ability to paint a picture and generate deep emotion with the written word, Steven fell in love with reading, writing and storytelling. As an 8th grader, he read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, for fun. It wasn’t a homework assignment. As a student at the University of Virginia, he was thrilled at the prospect of writing a thesis as the culmination of his undergraduate studies. While traveling the world for work, Steven kept writing, and his experiences around the globe have influenced his novels in many ways.

When living in Appalachia while writing his first novel, Steven studied and practiced the art of storytelling. Since that time, he always edits his books by reading them aloud to himself. Novels are a story and need to sound like one. Fiction readers want to escape from our everyday lives when we read a novel. Thus, the true job of a novelist is to imagine special things, sometimes even spectacular things, and then write about them in a way that inspires the reader to go there, too, leaving the ordinary behind.

Steven Decker lives and writes in both Arizona and Connecticut and travels throughout the world looking for new ideas and settings for his books. He enjoys spending time with Karen and Mr. Wilson, the beagle, walking in the countryside, and being with his family.

Emily is an engaging and relatable young woman who has a noticeable, physical challenge. Her never-give-up spirit takes her on a journey from the mountains of Colorado, where she helps differently-abled children learn to ski and in so doing imparts life lessons, to Ireland, and then to China. This is an odyssey of growth, acceptance and love. It encouraged my heart, and my soul, and left me wanting to take a similar journey of hope.

I actually read this a while back, before the new edition. It's one of my favorite Decker books!

Decker built a fantastic character in Emily. The concept and story is excellent, covering the complex topic of trauma and how people cope with the reality and daily struggle of something dark lingering in their mind. Her time in Ireland and the people she met there made the story feel like a memoir of growth, rather than a novel. But the characters and their realistic builds are just part of the prize. The pages turn easy with this book. The pacing is good. The writing is good, but the imagery is amazing. I feel like Decker plucked photographs for his scenes.

Emily’s journey around the world reminds us that our adventures for self-(re?)discovery and healing sometimes require us to break out of our cycles and comfort zones. My favorite line in the book: “…dreams were dreams, and life was life, but dreams could never be a substitute for the real thing.” Remember to live. Great book, well worth the read.

I loved this book from start to finish. Emily is a fabulous character and has the strength to reach within herself to find the wisdom of what is right and then pursue it with the vigor of someone who knows the truth. Fascinating scenes in the Rockies, Ireland, China, and the Netherlands. An emotional conclusion. It’s all there in this novel.

I kept reading until I was finished. Emily is an awesome character, and I wanted so badly for things to work out for her. I don’t see how anyone wouldn’t love this book!

This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride that will leave you breathless after you turn the last page.

“Walking Into Dreams” by Steven Decker is a story of a young woman who hasn’t given up on her dreams. She could have easily done so because of a tragic accident that has changed her life forever. She could have succumbed to depression and self-pity, and no one would have blamed her for this. Instead, she chose to live her life to the full despite the consequences of the accident affecting her everyday routine.
Emily is an active and determined young woman. She is good at her job; her family and friends love and support her. She cannot change her past, but she concentrates on her present and future. There are certain limitations she faces every day. But she has learnt to cope with them rather than made them the centre of her life.

Emily’s life isn’t perfect, and she realises that it hardly can ever be so. Still, it is satisfying in many ways, and its direction is straightforward and clear. Until one day everything turns upside down.

A strange encounter makes Emily doubt everything she’d known about life before. Suddenly, things that she thought were impossible become too real. If she wasn’t strong and determined, she would probably try to forget what she saw. Her mind and logic would eventually persuade her that it was something unimportant and unreal. But Emily isn’t one to let a chance slip between her fingers. So, she embarks on an incredible journey – both physical and emotional – searching for answers.

And the answers she will find are mind-blowing – both for her and for the readers.

I thoroughly enjoyed walking the Wicklow Way together with Emily in beautiful Ireland. I love walking; it is my favourite pastime outdoors. I could relate to Emily bonding with the people she met on that tour.
“Walking Into Dreams” is a story about following your heart – even if your mind warns you against jumping headfirst into the unknown. Even if it wasn’t in your plans to cross the world chasing what others would call a mirage.

It is a story of a person’s triumph over circumstances and hardships. Taking us readers with her, Emily travels from the steep ski slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to the countryside of Ireland and across the world to the temples of China.

Steven Decker knows how to make his readers’ hearts beat faster with anticipation of what will happen next. And in most cases, you cannot guess where this author’s imagination will take you.

Lost hand as a child. Many years later writer still continues to frequently mention only had left hand, we get it. This kind of response would be more appropriate for a more recent loss. Also in this day and age why no prothesic? I had to delete book only about 1/3 into it as it seems the frequently mentioned hand was more of of space filler then anything else.
